the one to come

Elias walked to the Ark.  He bowed his head respectfully, then lowered his lanky frame to the first step beneath the holy relic.  He dropped his head into his hands and took a deep, shuddering breath.  Much had been on his mind since Amariah’s return to Engaddi.  She seemed relatively happy to be involved in teaching the children how to read and write the Aramaic language.  But there were days when both the spiritual and her physical gloom deepened.  On those days, dark storm clouds clotted the sky and early twilight engulfed the tiny village of Engaddi.  The weather mirrored Amariah’s mood.

The experiences on her journey into the Beyond were a topic of much conversation for most of the villagers at Engaddi never traveled further than Jerusalem.  Her tales of life in the caravan were spellbinding.  How she survived the bridge collapse over a raging river brought chills to of fear and terror to everyone.  Encounters with the Dark Brothers were told around campfires in a night turned grave deep.  Shadows became demons, and distant sounds were the cries of lost souls wandering through the fires of hell on the planet Drago.  A whispered wind became the voice of the Dark Lord, Seth, who sought to tempt the unwary into his cult of evil.  Her tales of finding the Temple of the Crescent Lake in the midst of a vast desert brought sighs of relief because one false turn, one misstep would bring certain death in the Takla Makan desert.
